Path to normal delivery- A ray of hope through Ayurveda

Pregnancy is a beautiful journey of a woman’s life for welcoming a pure soul into this world. And the process of delivery is the 1st adventure of a newborn.

Cesarean Section is a lifesaving procedure developed to reduce maternal and new-born mortality rate. But CS’s when performed without appropriate indications can add risk to both mother and baby. As per recently published WHO report, “Cesarean section rates higher than 10% are not associated with reductions in maternal and new-born mortality rates”. In India, rate of CS has increased upto 28.1% in the private sector and 12% in public sector.  A study states that one in five pregnant women in India undergo C-sections even when they don't medically need one.

Isn’t this scary?

If overlooked into the causes for this high rate of Cesarean sections, a few of the reasons include late pregnancies due to late marriages, the rigidity of the cervix, inelastic pelvic muscles, reduced pain bearing capacities of women, the inability of the uterus to bear contractions, and so on.

Ayurveda is a science of life that well explains the care of a pregnant woman throughout the complete pregnancy and prepares the woman’s body for the process of normal delivery. There are many mythological stories signifying the importance of a pregnancy regime(Garbhasanksara) for the development of the great souls. Ayurveda explains monthly food regimes for the pregnant lady that helps for proper organogenesis and development of a healthy baby. It not only ensures physical growth but also develops the social and mental health of the baby.

Ayurveda explains the administration of Anuvasana Vastis with the medicated oils (Bala Taila, Yashti Taila, etc) and Kashaya Vastis, Yoni purana and Yoni Pichu for the preparation of the woman’s body for the act of easy delivery. It helps to increase the elasticity of the muscles and increases the pain threshold of the lady. Studies show that women undergoing this regime takes less time and effort and completes the process of delivery easily with minimal complications.
